Obon Festival


Japanese Kimekomi Dolls

I went to the Obon Festival today at the Mountain View Buddhist Temple. Obon is the period of praying for the repose of the souls of one's ancestors. People believe that their ancestors' spirits come back to their homes to be reunited with their family during obon.

These are kimekomi dolls. The artists carve and sand a piece of wood into the doll's shape and then tuck the fabric into the grooves.
